World Cup

At the 1929 FIFA congress, Uruguay was chosen to arrange the first ever World Cup. Uruguay, the reigning Olympic Champions, was chosen ahead of a quartet of European countries including Italy and Spain. Even though Uruguay offers to pay all team expenses, only four European countries make the three week trip to South America. The host builds a fantastic stadium in Montevideo that can hold 95,000. The Stadium is finished five days after the World Cup has started! The World Cup Champions were to receive what today is known as "The Jules Rimet trophy".

A total of thirteen teams participated in the first World Cup. Four European countries listed like France, Belgium, Yugoslavia, Romania, and nine American countries, United States, Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Paraguay. The countries grouped in a three format teams group, for the better of two games, and consequently for the impaired number on teams playing for the World Cup, a group had to be made up for four teams and classifying the best from three games. Each group winner classified for the semifinal round, in what comes to be like Argentina from group 1, United States from group 4, Uruguay from group 3, and Yugoslavia from group 2.

The countries that made final round were four, arranged in an eliminatory format of semifinals. The final played in July, 30th of 1929 brought in Uruguay over Argentina by 4-2,the first world cup winner.
